POSTED ON 06/17/2014 AT 01:06AM http://bangstyle.com/posts/Bailey_Bute-NAHA-110

The North American Hairstyling Awards, NAHA, is produced by the Professional Beauty Association (PBA) will celebrate 25 years in 2014 as the beauty industry’s leading honor. Bangstyle had the pleasure of getting to know the amazingly talented Bailey Bute, one of this year's nominees in the "Newcomer Stylist of the Year" category. Check out our exclusive interview with Bailey to learn a bit more about her collection and what fuels her passion for hair.

Tell us a bit about your nominated collection. What was the creative process like? Inspiration?
I wanted to do a subtle play on "Hear no evil, See no evil, Speak no evil" through the hair. The creative process was a lot of drawings and a lot of doll heads and a lot of feedback from my photographer. The inspiration was simple, soft, light, white, pretty and all about the hair more than anything else.

Where there collections in other categories that you found inspiring?
I always find the "Avant Grade" category so inspiring. It's maximum creativity; they make you see and believe things that you can do with the hair that you never thought would be possible.

Who are your idols in the hair industry? Have you met any of them?
Jake Thompson, Angelo Seminara, Dimitrios Tsioumas, Frank Apostolopoulos, Steven Robertson, Laurent Philippon. I have met two of them.

Are you on Social Media? What kind of people do you follow?
I am on instagram only. I follow all different product companies, celebrities, musicians, fashion lines, salons and other hair stylists.

What is your favorite aspect of being a stylist?
Being able to create something different every day. The music, the fashion, the people, I love it all.

What non-hair related areas do you constantly find yourself being inspired by?
Fashion is very inspiring to me but I am constantly inspired by everything around me from nature to food to music. I am always looking at something and thinking "How can turn this into hair?"

What area of hair would you like to explore more?
Wig making.

What fuels your passion? in other words, what gets you out of bed in the morning?
Art. The fact that I can be creative every single day, that I’m creating something new and exciting is the most meaningful thing in the world me.

What is your favorite hair texture to style?
I like styling curly hair. I find it challenging but I like to work with it because its usually pretty moldable.

What's your guilty pleasure?
I love traveling! I feel guilty about taking time off work but I love seeing other lifestyles and cultures and I think it opens up your eyes to the world.

Bailey Bute – NAHA Newcomer Stylist of the Year Finalist

By Ashley Heaton http://pyxie.com/trends/author/ashleyheaton/

To say that Bailey Bute has had a busy year would be an understatement. In addition to being named a NAHA Newcomer Stylist of the Year finalist, in 2014 she honed the coifs of numerous celebrities at the Sundance Film Festival and worked on the uber-viral music video for singer-songwriter Sia’s hit single “Chandelier.”

Despite her newfound cachet, however, Bute feels most at home behind the chair at Newbury Park, California’s Butterfly Loft Salon, where she’s been a stylist for over two years. She is passionate about catering to her clients’ needs and making each individual look and feel like his or her best self – and with an impressively diverse expertise in cut, color and styling, she’s a true jack of all trades.

Bute spoke with PYXIE about her recent career highlights, her dream collaborators, and what being a NAHA finalist means to her.

 Bailey Bute

PYXIE: Did you always want to be a hairstylist? What made you want to work in this field, and how did you get your start in the industry?
BAILEY BUTE: I was drawn to doing hair from a young age. When I was 10 I went to a birthday party at a beauty school, and I fell in love and knew that’s what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I started at Paul Mitchell The School in Salt Lake City and after graduating moved back home to California and started assisting at Butterfly Loft Salon for two years before earning my own chair.

P: What does being a NAHA finalist mean to you?
BB: It’s such an honor and I think it could be a huge jumpstart to my career. Getting noticed will hopefully open a lot of doors to new opportunities. I want to keep learning and growing as a stylist and any opportunity to do that would be incredible.

P: Aside from NAHA, what have been some of the most memorable moments in your career so far?
BB: One highlight was working on Sia’s “Chandelier” music video with Maddie Ziegler and seeing it get over 5 million hits in less than a week. Another was my first celebrity experience with Olympic gold medalists Shawn Johnson and Apolo Ohno. And being a part of Sundance this year doing hair for different celebrities.

P: Who in the industry would you most love to work with someday?
BB: It would be a dream to work with David La Chapelle, Francois Nars or Nicola Formichetti.

P: What is the most exciting part of what you do?
BB: The variation. Cutting, coloring and styling is different from day to day – I love that. One day I could be in the salon, and the next I could be on set.

P: How would you describe your signature style?
BB: My signature style is one that my customer loves! I like giving people a style that goes with their look; I think it completes a person’s style.

P: What are some of your favorite hair trends or looks for the coming summer season?
BB: My favorite looks right now are platinum blonde hair and fringe – I love them both!

P: What is the most requested hairstyle you get from clients?
BB: Most of the time my clients just want to enhance their natural hair. They are all about effortless, beautiful, healthy hair.

P: If you could get anyone in your chair, who would it be and what would you do for them?
BB: I’d love to work with someone like Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry or Lady Gaga; because they are not afraid to express their personalities through their hair, and they are not afraid of being different. They welcome change and creativity, and I think it would push my own creativity to work with people like that.

P: What are your must-have hair products right now?
BB: I’ve been using the Kevin Murphy line lately. I can’t live without Powder Puff; but Texture Master, Easy Rider, Body Builder and Fresh Hair are some of my favorites. I also love the Kenra hairsprays in all the different levels.

P: What’s next for you in the coming year?
BB: To continue to create, push boundaries, learn, grow and innovate.
